One fine day in May 1747, as Johann Sebastian Bach was paying a visit to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel – then a harpsichordist at the court of Friedrich II of Prussia – the music-loving king asked the old master to improvise a fugue on a theme of his invention. Immediately taking up the challenge, Bach improvised not only a fugue but composed a whole grand work on the king’s Thema regium (Royal Theme), the Musical Offering, which ranks with the Goldberg Variations and the Art of the Fugue as one of the great masterpieces of his later years.
