What would the Bach Festival be without the Christmas Oratorio! To shape the six cantatas which make up this work, Johann Sebastian Bach practiced a kind of musical recycling in that he reused old music to which he put a new text. Therefore, don’t be surprised when you hear, for instance, the familiar chorale melody “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden” from the St Matthew Passion in both the first and last cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio. After its first performance in the winter of 1734-1735, the work fell into a long slumber which lasted over a hundred years and wasn’t rediscovered until 1857. It has, since then, become a cheerful harbinger of the holiday season.
Unfortunately, for health reasons, Julien Prégardien (ténor) won't be able to participate to the Christmas Oratorio with OSM on the 16th and 17th of December 2015. He will replaced by James Oxley.
